BREAKING NEWS: Coppola gets the 2001 Thalberg Award, and three more VERY surprising people land Honorary Oscars:
I'm keeping up my streak for predicting each year's Honorary Oscars, but this year, I have to admit, I'm surprised. I only got one, but it's a biggie. First off, the estimable Francis Ford Coppola is being handed another award this year, but it's NOT an Oscar statuette (he already has five of those: one for co-writing the screenplay to Patton, one for co-producing The Godfather, and three for

to rib or not to rib....
For years, (since high school) I've had issues with my right ribs. The doctor told me it was my right floating rub.
We have 4 "floating ribs" - A rib is said to be "floating" if it does not attach to the sternum (the breast bone) or to another rib.
Lately its been bugging me more than ever, so I researched.
In some cases, a floating rib can cause problems for its owner. These ribs can slip out of position, putting pressure on internal organs, and they can also be broken as a result of trauma, causing considerable pain and putting the patient at risk for infection.
Turns out... there is a procedure in which you can remove your "floating ribs" to have a smaller waist.
I am not a fan of surgery... specifically "plastic" surgery. Freaks me out... and I find it un-necessary.
But in this situation... it might be beneficial for my body.
I will continue to research the options, but thought it was an extremely interesting topic.
Removing my ribs because they are problematic would lead to a coca cola shape body! haha

BREAKING NEWS about Terrence Malick's THE TREE OF LIFE. And what, exactly, is it like to select titles for a film festival crowd?
Upon seeing Anne Thompson's tweet about New York Film Festival selection committee member Todd McCarthy's incisive new post about what it's like to attack that laborious job, I was immediately reminded of my own odyssey as the Programming Director for the Dahlonega International Film Festival (now the Rome International Film Festival) back in the early 2000s. The festival's Executive Director,

Ladies and Gents... JONTE!
For the Siren Assassins Opening night of: THE CHRONICLES, I'm performing as my character LOLA. She always gets what she wants, and is rather spoiled and stubborn, and RUDE. Rhaposy James the creator, director and choreographer of the show chose the track "YA RUDE" by JONTE as one of "LOLA'S" songs :]
I am sooooo excited because Jonte's music is amazing!

My Movie Poster Collection: U-Z
I'm embarking now on my final (read: first) entry in my overview of this movie poster collection I've been working on for about 30 years. As you can see, I'm working backwards, starting with titles from U to Z. These poster images I got from the net; I refused to stretch my posters out to be photographed. However, this'll give you and me both an idea of my tastes. And, hey, if anyone is

Film #134: What On Earth!
I first remember seeing What On Earth! as a between-features offering on HBO in the early 1980s. May I say, what a great time for that channel it was; you could see all manner of short movies on it then--everything from the latest "videos" (on a feature they called Video Jukebox) to things like 1978's Special Delivery or Jim Henson's 1966 curio Timepiece. This was about 15 years after What on

Film #133: Inception
It is difficult to transmit how much stress Inception caused me--and no doubt others--before seeing it. But I'll try. Back when The Dark Knight was vying for a Best Picture Oscar, Kristopher Tapley, of In Contention, and I had a terrible, too-nasty (I love his site) quarrel about the merits of that film, directed by Christopher Nolan. You can see my opinions of that film here. Kris and I, on
